Authors should submit papers electronically via the journal’s electronic submission system at the link below.

JIRD publishes original, peer-reviewed manuscripts that provide theoretically informed empirical analyses of issues in international relations and international political economy, as well as original theoretical or conceptual analyses.

The submission system is designed to be self-explanatory but help is available within the submission site via the ‘Author Instructions’ tab.

Authors should submit a minimum of three files. For articles and technical notes, they should contain the following elements:

1. Author Cover Letter

  • The cover letter should briefly explain why the manuscript is a good fit for the journal and why it will be of interest to the journal’s readership.
  • It should include acknowledgements indicating scholars who have already read the manuscript and should thus not be contacted for peer review.

2. Author Information File:

  • the title of the article
  • the author(s)' names and affiliations
  • full contact details (including email, postal address and phone and fax numbers) for the corresponding author

3. Article:

  • the title of the article
  • a summary or abstract of not more than 150 words
  • keywords
  • the article in full, including references

4. Figures and Tables

  • Figures and tables may be uploaded either embedded in the main article file or as separate files.

Authors should confirm at point of submission that their article is not under consideration for publication elsewhere.

Manuscript files should not contain any author identifiable information as articles are double blind reviewed.

Authors should limit the number of citations to their own work; they should avoid setting up the contribution exclusively or predominantly through self-discussion. If authors include self-citation, this has to be sparse, convincingly camouflaged, and contextualized with reference to other authors. Self-citations should have the form of a third person reference, not the first person and they should not use the reference “Author".

If authors rely heavily on their previous work and are concerned with possible overlap, we ask to discuss distinctions from the previous work in the Author Cover Letter. We request a confirmation that at least 50% of both theoretical and empirical material is original and we reserve the right to withdraw the manuscript at any stage, including after publication, if this originality requirement is not convincingly met.

For manuscripts that involve research with human subjects, we request an explanation regarding ethical research conduct, either in the cover letter or in the manuscript, if the latter is more appropriate for data interpretation. In all cases which involve vulnerable participants or deception, we request proof of an institutional approval from a relevant research ethics body.

JIRD follows a double-blind review process. Manuscripts will normally receive three, and at least two independent reports. The editorial team take decisions based on the reviewers’ advice and their own assessment, considering whether the necessary revisions are feasible within the resubmission timeframe. Resubmission for manuscripts which have received the Revise and Resubmit or Accept with Major Revisions decision is expected within three months. Resubmission for manuscripts which have received the decision Accept with Minor Revisions is expected within one month. Delayed revisions may be treated as new submissions.
